Hampton Bays High School seniors Svetlana Datsyuk and Kaya Raynor had the opportunity to participate in the the American Legion Auxiliary Empire Girls State citizenship and leadership training program at SUNY Brockport.

During the one-week youth leadership training, attended by more than 700 students across the state, Datsyuk and Raynor participated in a mock government and honed a multitude of skills, including communication and teamwork.

Both students said the program gave them the opportunity to learn more about the inner workings of the government, make lasting friendships and prepare for college. In the fall, Datsyuk hopes to attend a university to study linguistics, and Raynor plans to pursue a degree in business or elementary education.
