My Story - Student #9

Student artwork

I am currently 16 years old. I just left immigration where they kept me for almost 3 months. I arrived in the United States on December 3, 2023. They were going to reunite me with my mother since she was here. I have dual nationality which makes it more complicated. They checked paperwork to see if these two nationalities were legal. They took me to a shelter, and they took care of me during this time.

In my country I was studying, but a group of people did not want to see me do well. There was a time when they threatened to harm me. At home with my maternal grandmother, everything was difficult. I was obliged to take care of their animals although my mother spent enough money to be well without needing to do that. My grandmother kept that money without wanting to buy much.

My mother found out about the situation and sent me and my sister to go. We left home on November 21, 2023. We were in Guatemala and we went to a place called El Naranjo, from there they moved us to Tabasco, Mexico. They moved us by trailer to Cancun, Mexico, from there we took a flight to Ciudad Juárez with the same coyotes. They kidnapped us, and they released me after asking for a ransom. When they dropped us off at the border, they tried to kidnap me again. I managed to get out of the truck and we walked until there was a number 36 on the wall. There we were caught by immigration and I was locked up for 3 months. I just got out.
