Fifth Hampton Bays athlete commits to college

A fifth Hampton Bays High School senior has committed to continuing athletics in college. Allie O’Brien, who was celebrated at a ceremony on June 20, will be attending Marist College in the fall as a pole vaulter on their track team. She will be studying secondary and special education. 

O’Brien joins Emma Halsey, Isaiah Lattanzio, Matthew Papajohn and Joffre Proano, who previously committed to athletics in college.

The Hampton Bays School District congratulates O’Brien on her commitment.

Hampton Bays junior competes at Nike Nationals

Hampton Bays High School junior Sofia Galvan had the opportunity to compete at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in the 2000-meter steeplechase, a five-lap race that includes hurdling over 25 barriers and into a water pit. After qualifying for the meet in May, she ran a 7:57 in the championship event, held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The Hampton Bays School District congratulates Galvan on qualifying for and competing at this event and finishing up an amazing junior year of running Hampton Bays track.

All-County: Sofia Galvan (2,000m steeplechase), Emma Halsey (100m hurdles and triple jump), Allie O’Brien (pole vault) and Asha Pensa (shot put and discus)

Set four school records in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 4x400m relay

Four Hampton Bays High School seniors were honored during a ceremony on June 4 for committing to continue athletics in college.

The Hampton Bays School District congratulates the following students:

Emma Halsey — University of Rhode Island, track and field

Isaiah Lattanzio — Flagler University, lacrosse

Matthew Papajohn —Sacred Heart University, track and field

Joffre Proano — SUNY Cortland, track and field

Hampton Bays track stars win at counties

Members of the Hampton Bays High School boys and girls track teams had an impressive run at the Suffolk County Spring Championship meet.

The girls team finished in fourth place overall. Asha Pensa placed second in shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 6.75 inches and second in discus with a throw of 131-11. Sofia Galvan placed third in the steeplechase with a time of 7 minutes, 55 seconds, and Emma Halsey had a personal best in hurdles, running 15.77 and finishing second. She also placed fourth and set a new school record in triple jump with a jump of 34 feet, 4.25 inches. Allie O’Brien placed second in pole vault, clearing a height of 8 feet. All four of these girls earned All-County medals for their performances.

The boys team finished fifth overall. The 4x400-meter relay team, made up of Charlie Garcia, Erick Ibanez, Matthew Papajohn and Cesar Ramos, took first place with a time of 3:32.18. Garcia was three-time county champion in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 4x400-meter relay. He broke the school record in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, with the fastest time in New York in the 100-meter race — 10.62. Papajohn, who was part of the winning 4x400-meter relay team, earned All-County in the 400-meter dash, finishing second overall. The 4x100 relay team made up of Charlie Alvarracin, Garcia, Kevin Londono and Osman Milian Jr. finished fourth overall, and Joffre Proano also scored in pole vault with a fifth-place finish.

The Hampton Bays School District extends its congratulations to the athletes on a job well done.
