A Message From Our Teachers

Dear Students,

I want to say a big thank you to each of you for being so brave and honest. I know it's not easy to talk about personal matters, especially the tough and emotional parts of our lives. But you did it! You shared your stories with us, and it meant a lot.
When you tell your stories, it helps us understand each other better. It helps us see that we all face challenges and tough times. But it also shows how strong and brave you are. Every story you shared showed us something important. It showed us how to be strong when things get hard, and it showed us how to keep going even when it's tough. Your stories made our class a safe and caring place. I want you to know that your stories are important. They helped us learn and grow as a group. And they touched all of our hearts.

I encourage you to keep sharing your stories, your experiences, and your truths. Your voices are powerful, and they deserve to be heard. Thank you for trusting us with your stories and for reminding us of the strength that lies within each and every one of us.

Dear students,

In participating in this project, I asked you to share a part of your lives which was once hidden. I know that it is difficult to write your emotions down on paper, and even more difficult to share those emotions with the world. Thank you for your bravery and your trust in me to share your stories, and thank you for teaching me about what it means to be resilient.

Local arts organizations, community leaders, and politicians have joined our reception tonight to learn about you. Soon, you will graduate and part two of your life’s journey will begin. However, your This is My Story project will stay behind. As one final activity in this project, I ask you to take a moment to reflect on the power of your own voice. After your time at Hampton Bays High School has ended, your story will continue to teach newcomers that they are not alone; that there are and have been many other students just like them, who, in spite of the challenges they faced, built happy and successful lives at Hampton Bays High School. Your story has already taught administrators, teachers, and community leaders alike about what it means to be an immigrant student. Think about the impact that telling your story will continue to have on those who make decisions about your education and those who will soon arrive in our classrooms.

And above all, remember that the more difficult the climb, the sweeter the victory.

Dear students,

Your stories are a reminder of why I wanted to be a teacher in the first place, to help people who want to better themselves and create a brighter, better world for all of us. Your journeys are an inspiration for us all. You have lived, experienced, and survived things many of us as adults will never have to confront. You not only survived, but you overcame and have made the decision to thrive despite your experiences. Regardless of what anyone may say, you, your struggle, and your fight to create a better life for yourselves, your families, and your communities is the story of America itself. This country was built by people just like you and continues to grow stronger and more diverse because of you. Never let anyone take that away from you. Your journeys will become the stories of America that will be studied by future generations. You should be proud of what you have overcome and all that you have, and will continue to accomplish. I know I am, and will always be proud to know you and honored to have taught you.

Dear Students,

Just like you, I’m someone who was born in a different country and didn’t grow up speaking English. We all came from very different cultures and traditions. For some of us, it was a scary and difficult journey; however, as we move forward in the United States, we should never forget to honor our identity, where we come from, and what makes us strong.

Remember that the best place and time in life is HERE and NOW. So, now you are here, through sun and rain, breeze and storm; therefore, choose to be present, choose to live, and keep dreaming. I am extremely blessed to have you as my students and immensely proud of who you are, and what you can become. Together, we can make this country a better place for one and all.

Sharing your stories was not easy. It takes a lot of courage to share with the world a part of you that you tried so hard to put aside because it was traumatic. However, it was necessary to unload, let go, and start all over.

I am extremely proud of all of you for doing this for others, but especially for yourself. You are teaching other students not to be afraid, to overcome obstacles in life, and to keep going. Your story will inspire others along the way.

Thank you for letting me be part of this healing process and moving forward.

Quiero agradecerles enormemente a cada uno de ustedes por ser tan valientes y honestos. Sé que no es fácil hablar de asuntos personales, especialmente de las partes difíciles y emocionales de nuestras vidas. ¡Pero lo hiciste! Compartiste tus historias con nosotros y significó mucho.

Cuando cuentas tus historias, nos ayudas a entendernos mejor unos a otros. Nos ayuda a ver que todos enfrentamos desafíos y tiempos difíciles. Pero también demuestra lo fuerte y valiente que eres. Cada historia que compartiste nos mostró algo importante. Nos mostró cómo ser fuertes cuando las cosas se ponen difíciles y cómo seguir adelante incluso cuando las cosas se ponen difíciles. Al participar en este proyecto, les pedí que compartieran una parte de sus vidas que alguna vez estuvo oculta. Organizaciones artísticas locales, líderes comunitarios y políticos se unieron a nuestra recepción esta noche para conocer más sobre ti. Pronto te gradúas y comenzarás la segunda parte del viaje de tu vida. Sin embargo, tu proyecto de Esta es mi historia quedará atrás. Como actividad final de este proyecto, te pido que te tomes un momento para reflexionar sobre el poder de tu propia voz. Una vez finalizada su estancia en Hampton Bays High School, su historia seguirá enseñando a los recién llegados que no están solos; que hay y ha habido muchos otros estudiantes como ellos que, a pesar de los desafíos que enfrentaron, construyeron vidas felices y exitosas en Hampton Bays High School. Sus historias son un recordatorio de por qué quería ser maestra en primer lugar, para ayudar a las personas que quieren mejorar y crear un mundo mejor y más brillante para todos nosotros. Tus viajes son una inspiración para todos nosotros. Usted ha vivido, experimentado y sobrevivido a cosas que muchos de nosotros como adultos nunca tendremos que enfrentar. No sólo sobreviviste, sino que venciste y tomaste la decisión de prosperar a pesar de tus experiencias. Independientemente de lo que digan, ustedes y su lucha por crear una vida mejor para ustedes, sus familias y sus comunidades son la historia de Estados Unidos. Este país fue construido por personas como usted y continúa volviéndose más fuerte y diverso gracias a usted. Nunca dejes que nadie te quite eso. Sus viajes se convertirán en historias de Estados Unidos que serán estudiadas por las generaciones futuras. Debes estar orgulloso de lo que has superado y de todo lo que tienes y seguirás logrando. Sé que lo soy y siempre estaré orgulloso de conocerte y honrado de haberte enseñado.

Al igual que tú, soy alguien que nació en un país diferente y no crecí hablando inglés. Todos venimos de culturas y tradiciones muy diferentes. Para algunos de nosotros, fue un viaje difícil y aterrador; sin embargo, a medida que avanzamos en los Estados Unidos, nunca debemos olvidarnos de honrar nuestra identidad, de dónde venimos y qué nos hace fuertes.

Recuerda que el mejor lugar y momento de la vida es AQUÍ y AHORA. Entonces, ahora estás aquí, a través del sol y la lluvia, la brisa y la tormenta; por lo tanto, elige estar presente, elige vivir y sigue soñando. Me siento muy bendecida de tenerlos como mis alumnos y estoy inmensamente orgullosa de quiénes son y de lo que pueden llegar a ser. Juntos podemos hacer de este país un lugar mejor para todos.

Has pasado por muchas luchas y has podido superar lo imposible. Tu fuerza y valentía es algo de lo que estoy muy orgulloso. Poder compartir tu historia es muy difícil, pero ayudará a muchas personas de maneras que no sabes. Serás la razón por la que alguien más compartirá su historia con el mundo. Has animado a otros a no tener miedo. Todos ustedes son mis modelos a seguir y los apoyo en cada paso del camino mientras navegan por su nuevo hogar aquí en los Estados Unidos.

Compartir tus historias no fue fácil. Se necesita mucho coraje para compartir con el mundo una parte de ti que tanto intentaste dejar de lado porque era traumática. Sin embargo, era necesario desahogarse, soltar y empezar de nuevo.

Estoy muy orgullosa de todos ustedes por hacer esto por los demás, pero especialmente por ustedes mismos. Estás enseñando a otros estudiantes a no tener miedo, a superar los obstáculos de la vida y a seguir adelante. Tu historia inspirará a otros a lo largo del camino.

Estoy realmente impresionado con su valentía al compartir sus viajes con el mundo. Estoy inmensamente orgulloso de tu capacidad para contar TUS historias, cada una única y poderosa. Todos ustedes han superado dificultades que muchas personas nunca experimentarán ni comprenderán completamente. Tus esfuerzos en esta experiencia narrativa dejarán una marca eterna en todos aquellos que se tomen el tiempo de rascar la superficie para comprender tu viaje.

Sepa que ya ha tenido un impacto positivo en mí y en todos los afortunados de conocerlo aquí en HB.
