Members of the Hampton Bays Middle School National Junior Honor Society, in partnership with the Southampton Town Youth Advisory Committee, HUGS Inc., the Builder’s Club and Rotary Interact Club, hosted a second annual Volunteer Day of Service on June 8. During the day, 70 students volunteered at various locations throughout the community to help in meaningful ways.

Volunteers assisted at the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center, Ecological Culture Initiative, Hampton Bays Public Library, Long Island Cares Food Bank, Ponquogue and Meshutte Beach Clean-Up and Southampton Animal Shelter. They also participated in a joint initiative by the Southampton Town Youth Bureau and HUGS Inc. to raise awarness about the dangers of drinking and driving. Other projects undertaken by students included making dog toys, working in the community garden at Hampton Bays Middle School, painting a canvas mural for the middle school hallway, making knot-tie fleece blankets for trauma victims, and organizing and cleaning out a donation closet at the middle school.

The event was sponsored by the Hampton Bays Stop and Shop, who donated food and supplies for a barbecue lunch for volunteers, and Gemelli Gelato, who donated ice cream for the volunteers.
