My Story - Student #15

Cosas que aconsejo a personas que recién vienen a USA.

Primero que todo, aconsejo a estas personas que si tienen esposo o hijos vengan todos juntos por más difícil que sea. Que de una u otra manera encuentren el poder venir todos juntos. También puedo aconsejar que no traigan mucha ropa ya que todo eso muchas veces lo botan. Mejor traer ropa que no se usa o está muy vieja, además de que si les toca caminar o correr les puede estorbar mucho así que lo más importante es llevar demasiada agua. También que tengan un ̈coyote ̈ en el que ustedes digan que se puede confiar o que otra gente conocida pueda decir que es de confianza. Un ''coyote'' para mi es la persona a la que le pagan una suma de dinero y su trabajo es llevarnos a la frontera de Estados Unidos para entregarnos, él es la persona que conoce esas zonas y posiblemente trabaja con la mafia o con narcotraficantes mexicanos. Muchas veces y casos se han visto los dejan tirados en medio de la nada o también pueden hacer con ellos cosas horrorosas. Otra cosa es que nunca están seguros de nada, no confíen en absolutamente nadie después de salir de su país, ciudad o lo que sea porque a veces en el camino los lastiman, los gritan o pueden robarlos así que no lleven nada que valga mucho para ustedes. Que estén demasiado calmados y preparados para cualquier cosa. También para un buen acto ayudar a los que más se les dificulta en el camino ya que eso no es un viaje o un recorrido fácil y es mejor que todos puedan complir su objetivo.

¿Cómo fue la expectativa?

 Para empezar yo siempre tenía la mentalidad de que aquí se llega a trabajar y lo he tenido siempre demasiado claro, pero por otro lado pensaba que iba a ser más fácil las cosas aquí. Cuando llegué fue muy difícil para nosotras ya que estábamos solas para empezar en ese camino. Gracias a que teníamos dos familiares mi madre pudo conseguir un trabajo lo más pronto posible y comenzar su labor. Realmente estoy segura y también porque la veía y me lo decía no fue para nada fácil adaptarse a un lugar totalmente diferente al de nosotras sobre todo por el idioma. Creía que conseguir amigos aquí iba a ser muy difícil ya que muchas veces me decían que los niños de aquí se creían mucho porque tenían muchos mejores recursos y tenían todo lo que querían, a comparación de los niños inmigrantes ya que nosotros sí podemos obtenerlo pero no tan fácil. Otra cosa en mis expectativas eran las carreteras y reglas de aquí. Pensé que las calles eran limpias y sin huecos a diferencia de mi país al igual que las reglas. Por ejemplo el PARE en colombia se hace si es que hay mucho carro pero realmente la mayoría de veces nunca lo hacen y por eso hay muchos accidente a diferencia de aquí ya que por obligación se tiene que hacer o sino se paga mucho dinero por la multa. Otra diferencia de mi país aquí es que en mi país los maestros  van a los salones a dar clases y aquí los estudiantes son los que cambian de salón. 

Things I advise people who just come to the USA.

First of all, I advise these people that if they have a husband or children, they come all together no matter how difficult it may be. That in one way or another they find the power to all come together. I can also advise that you do not bring a lot of clothes since all of that is often thrown away. It’s better to bring clothes that are not used or are very old. In addition, if they have to walk or run it can get in the way a lot, so the most important thing is to carry a lot of water. Also, have a "coyote" that you say can be trusted or that other people that you know say is trustworthy. A ''coyote'' for me is the person who is paid a sum of money and his job is to take us to the border of the United States in order to hand us over. He is the person who knows about those areas and possibly works with the mafia or Mexican drug traffickers. Many times and cases have been seen, they leave them stranded in the middle of nowhere or they can also do horrible things with them. Another thing is that you can never be sure of anything, do not trust absolutely anybody after leaving your country, city or whatever because sometimes on the way they hurt you, yell at you or rob you so don't take anything that is worth a lot to you. That they are too calm and prepared for anything. It is also a good act to help those who find it most difficult along the way since this is not an easy trip or journey and it is better for everyone to be able to achieve their goal.

What was the expectation?

To begin with, I always had the mentality that here you come to work and I have always had it very clear, but on the other hand I thought that things were going to be easier here, but when I arrived it was very difficult for us since we were alone. Thanks to the fact that we had two relatives, my mother was able to get a job as soon as possible and start her work, I'm really sure and also because I saw her and she told me it was not at all easy to adapt to a place totally different from ours, especially because of the language. I believed that making friends here was going to be very difficult since many times they told me that the children here are difficult to impress because they had much better resources and had everything they wanted compared to immigrant children. Another thing in my expectations were the roads and rules here. I thought that the streets were clean and without holes unlike in my country, but here the roads have holes too. The STOP sign in Colombia is very different and really most of the time they never stop and that is why there are many accidents, unlike here since it has to be done out of obligation or else you pay a lot of money for the fine. Another difference here in my country is that in my country the teachers go to the classrooms to teach and here the students are the ones who change classrooms.
