My Story - Student #38

Mis consejos para los recién llegados:

Enfócate en aprender el inglés para que seas reconocido en el país como una persona que vino con metas. Cuando eres una persona bilingüe, eres parte de la cultura del país y la comunidad en general. No puedes llegar muy lejos si no aprendes el inglés.  

Para aprender el idioma, escucha lo que la gente dice. Si no entiendes,preguntales que significa y luego repítelo con ellos. Si tienes miedo, memoriza lo que dijeron y traducelo. No deberías pensar mucho en que te van a decir en inglés o cómo vas a responder. Eso te atrapa. No tengas miedo de hablar. Juntate con los que hablen inglés. Lo que está a tu alrededor, es lo que serás parte. Escoge un ambiente que va a ayudarte a ser la persona que quieres ser. 

Enfócate en aprender diferentes habilidades porque si uno no funciona, el otro si. Yo comencé mi propio negocio, entonces estoy luchando por dos sueños: graduarme y crecer mi negocio de landscaping. 

Si un día quieres dejar la escuela, primero tienes que preguntarte a ti mismo, “¿por qué?” Tu respuesta te va a decir si lo dejas o no. Yo pensaba en dejar la escuela, y me pregunté porque iba a dejarlo. Me dí cuenta que mis ambas metas, graduarme y tener mi negocio, vienen juntas. Si dejo uno, afecta a la otra. Si hubiera dejado la escuela, habría perdido el acceso a conocer nuevos futuros clientes. También, toda la presión hubiera sido en el éxito de mi negocio. Cuando me gradúe, voy a tener un diploma que me puede llevar a la universidad y un negocio que paga mis clases y mis fracturas. 

El Regents de Inglés es difícil, pero no te rindas. No te sientas mal por un examen o que no es algo que puedes lograr. No pierdas la esperanza de poder pasarlo con la siguiente oportunidad que te dan.

Focus on learning English so that others know you came to this country for a reason.When you are a bilingual person, you are part of the culture of the country and the community in general. You can’t go very far without learning English.
 
In order to learn the language, listen to what people are saying. If you don’t understand, ask them what the words mean and later, repeat it back to them. If you are afraid, memorize what they said and translate it. You shouldn’t think too much about what people are going to say to you in English or how you are going to respond. That will stress you out. Don’t be afraid to speak. Surround yourself with people who speak English. Who you surround yourself with will become a part of you. Choose an environment that is going to help you be the person that you want to be. 

Focus on learning different skills because if one doesn’t work out, the other one will. I started my own business, so I am fighting for two dreams: graduating and growing my landscaping business. 

If one day you want to drop out of school, first you have to ask yourself “why?” Your answer is going to tell you if you should drop out or not. I thought about dropping out of school, and I asked myself why. I realized that my two goals, graduating and having my business, go hand in hand. If I left one, it affects the other. If I had dropped out of school, I would have lost access to meet new future clients. Also, all of the pressure would have been on the success of my business. When I graduate, I am going to have a diploma which can take me to college and a business that will pay for my classes and my bills. 

The English Regent’s is difficult, but don’t give up. Don’t feel bad over a test or think that it’s not something you can achieve. Don’t lose hope that you will pass it in the next opportunity that you are given.
