Uniting art and literature

Literature and art blended as part of an interdisciplinary lesson at Hampton Bays Middle School. After a schoolwide reading of “The Science of Breakable Things” by Tae Keller, Adrienne Gagliardi’s art students created artwork that was inspired by the mysterious blue orchid in the book. Fifth graders experimented with watercolors and collage techniques to create their own floral masterpieces, while sixth graders channeled Georgia O'Keeffe’s style with vibrant oil pastel floral designs. Seventh and eighth grade students worked to master the art of scientific botanical drawings using colored pencils on tan paper.
